This model of family peer support leverages the informality of family networks, while providing an infrastructure grounded in community development. Therefore, for the purposes of this model, we define (capitalized) Family Networks as connected groups of families in a local community who share the lived experiences of imposed low expectations, oppression, ableism and segregation working to find mutual support within the group. The purpose of this model is to help families navigating disability to develop greater social integration and meaningful relationships while helping communities dismantle the systems of oppression that perpetuate low expectations, ableism, and segregation - helping them become welcoming and supportive of all families.
This innovative approach is inspired by the pioneering work of Kathryn Weit and Mary Lee Fay.
